When Picking a Datnoid, what should I look for?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For me I always put my fishes' happiness in front of health..

Ade, thanks my surnames sow low, not snow... I would've used the search engine if I knew what term is used to described these dark and pale datnoids.... Now I know its stable/unstable :)

They grow extremely slow. IMO if its too big for your tank (unless you have like a 20 gal) then somebody will most likely buy it off you. And you should try to buy the stable ones. I bought 5, 1 was stable at the store and 4 were unstable, and they stayed the same in my tank

Seriously they can be housed in a 20 gal? If they grow extremely slow then I presume its bad to house them with a south american Juruense?

I wouldn't really care about the stable/unstable at this point. The datnoids can turn stable when they hit your tank.

Use the search function snow. Type in stable or unstable and you will find a zillions threads. Nearly every thread here is either to do with feeding, stable or tank mates.

It's a bit of a mystery why they go stable and unstable. What makes one tiger change colour may NOT make another tiger do the same.

Hows the NGT mcphisy?

True, there's a bunch of previous threads about stable and unstable. The NGT is amazing, stomach is fulled from 5x earthworms. His stomach is fulled, but I've noticed that he takes his sweet time eating them. First he just stares at them for 30 seconds- minute then he strikes. My indos eats worms in an instant, but this guy is much slower. Do you think my indos will outcompete my NGT? Or will the competition motivate the NGT to eat faster?

I think thats a bit exaggerated. Indos grow up to around 4"+ pretty fast, then slow down. House the baby indos in a 60+, when they get too big just sell/trade them. As for the Juruense, have no experience, it is a catfish so I'm assuming it grows fast. I would say no to the juruense and datnoids.

Sow low, apologies.. I type to fast ... Lol

Mcphishy, nice job on stuffing that NGT. Slowly but surely you'll know when it's time to try prawns..... Then after prawns .... Pellets.
You have posted some pretty good feeding tips in your posts.
And starving/ converting is much easier on the mind when you know the tiger is already fat and plump belly to start with.
I bought 3 thinbars about 3.5 inch. 2 had sunken bellies, but They had nice bars,
They are all hammering chopped prawns after a week.

My mistake did not mean to say they would be fine in a 20 gal. I think you'd be able to have them in like a 40 gal for a good amount of time. As stated before they start to grow EXTREMELY slow after around 4"

if u could not find any stable tiger, pick those more pale rather then those dark in color. choose the patern of the bars u like and size. Hope u got one soon.

Why pale over dark? Do the pale ones usually stable up since larger unstable ones are dark?

Usually pale one is easily get back to stable look. Even if they don't get back to stable look but they are better then dark color. I hate the dark unstable one becoz they don't look good when they are in dark color.
However their color tend to change you just got to be patience.

Indo are 50/50 with stability. U will never have a community of tigers that are ALL stable .... All of the time . One or 2 maybe stable 24/7 and the others taking turns to go sable an unstable.
The unpredictable nature of This fish is one of the reasons why I love them so much.

Very true. I've also heard if a dat is unstable 24/7 theres no chance of it ever stabilizing?
