corona, cali
i am building a stand from my 240 acrylic and i would like to build it by notching the 4x4s like the pic below. problem is i cant find any straight and level 4x4s, they are all twisted and jacked up. does anyone know of any places that have a good supply of wood? i live an corona ca. also would i be able to accomplish the same effect by screwing 2x4s together?

Try and find a unit of lumber that is still banded or has not been unbanded very long. Thats where you will find the straighter pieces. As lumber sits unbanded, get handled, get mishandled, it starts to twist. Once you findnoce straight pieces, get them home, cut and screwed/bolted into place ASAP. I just finished a stand out of 2x4s and 2x6s that I am very pleased with. I "barrowed" the plans from this thread.. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254328

you can screw 2x4's together to get the same effect. If you can't find nice straight 4x4's, get some of the 2x4 STUDS, these are the best, straightest boards you'll find at the lumber yard.

you will have more... somewhere theres a thread about how 2 2x4s are stronger than a single 4x4.. i dont know or care why.... but i know the chance of you finding a straight piece of anything around here is prettymuch never going to happen...

dont bother with the lowes or the either HD in corona.. both have nothing but a constant supply of rainbows with it comes to lumber... sure i still waste an hour at each place looking before giving up and getting the straightest pieces i can find...

from time to time ive found straight lumber at the HD off of lamonite (15N) the lowes thats across the street has also been a constant letdown...

ive yet to try ganahl lumber (its off main just north of the 91) but im going to try to get by there tomorrow since i need to get the 140/100 double stand built and the 220 stand rebuilt....

after all the rain weve had im not holding my breath for anything though..

I spent 4 hours and disassembled 4 different piles of 2x4's to get as many straight ones as I could when I renovated the back of my house. Seeing as you shouldn't need more than 12-15 2x4's to build a stand, it shouldn't be too hard to find them...

yea chester i went to ganahl and i couldnt find any 4x4s. i didnt look for 2x4s tho. let me know if u find good lumber. ill be heading there bright and early saturday.

will do

Nice to hear that the crooked lumber problem is everywhere. The best I could find is a bit of a drive, but it pays off.

Good luck,

Bear
