Where are the hybrids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just because a pup looks like one parent or the other, does not mean that it is a 'pure' animal and not a hybrid. It is possible that females can have a litter with multiple sires- it'd be cool to do the genetics to figure out, but as Colin states, it does happen in some shark species.

Pattern is just one in a series of traits that can be passed down to offspring and you cannot tell for sure who the parents are based on pattern. Think about people- one parent can have blue eyes and one parent can have green eyes- you will not be able to tell who the father of a child is based on eye color!

congrats on the pups.....

Congrats!

They are all hybrids.. cross them back into a Leo and you will get all Leo pups I bet.. (this is the major problem with hybrids - sold as pure due to pattern, but not pure due to genetics)

The 2 with the different patterns would be called Potamotrygon "SP" in Asia.. SP = Special. These are the ones they grow out and re-breed with other hybrids to create those 'super patterns' .. these are also the ones that create the huge inflation in price especially when they are re-crossed with another SP.. Only because 5-10% of the offspring produce the SP type, they are considered much more rare..

I have done alot of reading on this and I don't think it has to do with multiple fathers but more to do with patterns being recessive or not.. 'SP' is a big deal over in Asia because they have been doing this for a long while now.. to the point where they have bred them 2-3 generations from the F0 crosses..

heres a little article I wrote about it..

The males in your tank must be in heaven right now haha.. mating with such a female

Even though their disk markings are different, if you look at their tails they have very similar markings.

Thanks Colin, thanks everyone.

I forgot to add that there was a male motoro in the tank. This is my second litter of hybrids from the same motoro female. The first litter being all 3 hybrids. I was 99% sure the leo was the father because he paired up with her when she dropped her last pups with the male motoro showing no interest. I'll be sure to take out the male motoro the next time around.

Interesting read Miles, thanks for the info.

i like them
