Where can I get a long nose gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm having a go this coming friday in catching a few smaller gar myself. I already have one alligator gar and one (what I believe) to be a spotted gar. Make that two, caught a 20 inch spotted the other day and it's housed at my fathers as he wanted one to keep for some time.
Soon enough these fish will be housed in a newly built outdoor pond about 3k gallons that is going to be 16x17 and 2.5 foot deep. The freeze level here is only 8 inches in my area. These will be housed with lily pads and a nice log to hide amongst as well as a UV sterilizer and waterfall for water movement. I aim to start my own thread with photo updates on the build as it begins. Already have a koi pond built but really dont want to introduce gar to that! lol

I actually plan to have my koi and
Gar together. Gar are very peaceful and as long as the koi are large enough I think they will be okay together. The concern I have about having them together is the gar aren't assertive eaters, but I think I can work around that. My pond is actually two separate ponds connected by a waterfall, so I can accommodate different fishes needs to extent.

I just can't make myself put them together. Especially if the koi were to spook a gar into jumping.

So http://tampaaquaculture.com actually has long nose gar , but they are not listed on the website. Apparently these fish are from Florida and the seller doesn't think they will survive Virginia winters. I have a friend with a small long nose gar he caught here that he will be keeping indoors in a 4500 gallon once it gets large enough. I'm trying to see if he will trade me his Virginia long nose for a Florida long nose. But I want to be sure what they have at Tampa aquaculture is in fact long nose gar and not Florida gar. I have attached a picture from their site. I've been burned before on gar. What do you all think is this a real longnose or something else?

I'd say those are long nose. Very slender body, long long snout. Upper jaw is usually 2.5 times the length of the main head.
