Where can I get black sand substrate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I couldnt get any 3M easy or for a good price so I went with Estes ultra reef sand. Looks close to 3M but easier to get and clean. There was no rinsing needed at all...unlike the 3m stuff. I got it for about 1$ per pound....

Found some at the Petland on the other side of town.

17.95 per 10 pound bag...:WHOA:

but I like it.

I just bought 2 bags of the color quartz black today (T Grade) near Chicago. It was only $18.75 per 50lbs. I would definately look for it near you, it is very affordable, and it is almost the exact consistency of a crushed coral I used in my 55 like 8 years ago for Africans.

I found a local distributor for the 3m color quartz and got them to custom mix 100# of black/brown/red/tan/grey for me. Normally sells for $33 per 50#, but they gave it to me for free since the bags were all open anyway. I've heard of other peeps getting their 3m for free when the bags were already opened. Here's the link to 3m site where you can search for a distributor. Good luck :)
