Exactly Peter... the breeding approach to maintaining a line of convicts that's authentic to those found in Rio Whatever is different than the approach to developing a super-colorful, super-sized, long-finned one.
The moral / ethical / taste judgements around whether it is "right" or "desireable" to develop captive fish that are less viable (due to their brighter colors, larger size, longer fins, etc.) than their natural counterparts is one that, to me, seems pretty straightforward: we've been doing it since like 200 AD with fancy koi...and the array of fish available at any pet store are a testament to the market's desire for "fancy fish" (whether technically line bred of hybrids).
