Where I disagree with the common filtration practices.

The BB are more robust to tap water than people think.

Out of curiosity, has this ever been tested or validated? I've always wondered how long BB would actually survive when out of water or blasted with chlorinated water. Would be interesting to know, but I don't see how you'd know for sure unless you have some serious lab equipment. I guess it's one of those cases of better safe than sorry!

me too. We need a scientist stat!

If I am servicing my tank, I just rinse everything while I drain the tank...It takes a while to drain 70-100 gallons so I have plenty of time to clean up before the tank water needs to be stopped.

I also agree with cleaning mechanical media in tap water. I've been doing it this way for many years with no harm effects. I thoroughly shake my bio media few times a year in tank water and I take a high pressure garden hose to all my mechanical foam and filter socks once a week. Trying to clean filter socks in tank water barely does anything to it. Pretty much u be spending hours and hours trying to scrub your filter socks in tank water back to white where it only takes minutes to spray it back to white. I just don't think the contact time of tap water cleaning your mechanical media isn't long enough to do any severe harm to your bio filtration.

Am I the only one who doesn't use bleach on my filter socks? Just straight dish washer no soap.

I never thought that any type of detergent was needed.I give my socks and sponges a good blast with the garden hose and call it a day.

Anytime I wash my filters, I always use the garden hose. I've always heard about washing your Biological Media with tank water, but never Mechanical. Anyways, I always wash everything with tap water and no mini cycles or crashes. I've always felt that the tank holds enough Beneficial Bacteria to recolonize the ceramic rings.
