meat packin house where they custom butcher ...mine cost me a dollar,,get a cleaver chop it thin slice it in lil pieces from freezer,,they thaw when they hit water and my fish oscars,tt eel, clown knife all love it

beef heart recipe:
Have the butcher trim all fat and gristle(heard about that already huh? I bet lol)
Run it through a grinder NOT blender
dissolve one adult vitamin( I use centrum cuz its complete from a to zinc) in a cup and a half of boiling h2o (use one capsule for every 5lbs)
1 tblspn of agar agar (u can get it at asian markets or google it j/k heres the link http://www.vitasprings.com/agar-agar-powder-2-oz-now.html)

and 3 envelopes of plain gelatin

bring this mixture to a boil and run it through a cheese cloth and immediately add it to the beef heart. mix thoroughly

add this to a few plastic bags and squish it out so they are thin and you can easily break them after freezing them.

I add a few pieces to a cup of tank h2o and let it thaw in that then I drain the excess h2o and the feed is on!

I got this from one of my discus books and they dig it. you can also substitute this with chicken or liver and egg but I'd only feed that once a week tops! HIGH IN CHOLESTEROL

I GET MINES FROM A MEXICAN GROCERY STORE AND QUITE A FEW DOWN HERE IN MOVAL. VERY CHEAP TOO. LESS THAN A $1.50 FOR A 2.5-3 LB. PACK.

We belong to a meat co-op for the dogs so we pick cases of beef heart up a LOT cheeper than the markets. If theres enough intrest in MoVal we could always order an extra case next time around and seperate it. It would be a lot less than your paying per pound now.

says : beef heart slices, its vacccuum sealed, and sliced :) a little fat on some slices but i just cut the fat off and put it in a grinder then vaccuum pack and freeze. works good.

its in the misc meats section.

A Walmart misc meat section sounds scary to me:D

We get beef heart in bulk for .57 cents a pound in 45 or 60 pound cases. Thaw it in COOL water never warm or hot. It can be ground or diced as needed. This is best done before the heart completely thaws.

Why not warm water?

warm water tends to partially cook the meat rather than just thawing it. The fastest way we've found of thawing meat for the dogs is a fan. But for small quantities cool water is best.

:iagree: This is so true. Thnx for sharing. BTW, leaving in the refrigerator is another way of thawing without having the meat partially cooked...

if you are going to make your own fish food as I have in the past make sure you trim every bit of fat off, not good for fish. I had a nice recipe for freshwater so. amer cichlids that made them grow pretty quick
