where to buy a turtle

It's very, very hard to leave a reptile show empty handed.

This is true,but you can buy them from other states.I'm not looking to sell,I am looking to buy and own them for my kids.It is not illegal to own them here,just to buy or sell them here.I think they can be sold also if over 4" but don't hold me to that.I want them for life and have no plans on reselling them anyway.It has something to do with a turtle under 4" can be swallowed by a child or something like that.

The reason you can't buy them under 4" is because way back when, little kid would put them in their mouths and that was causing some of the salmonella out breaks but not anything significant. Once it was found out that putting a turtle in your mouth may give you salmonella they banned the sale under 4".

So thanks to little dumb hick kids we can't buy babies in store. Which is both a good and bad thing. Its good because no longer are do you see people buying very small bowls and putting baby RES in them.

True,but I wouldn't exactly call them "dumb hick kids" sheesh,they're just kids man.They just didn't know any better.Probably someone said,"hey I dare you to stick the turtle in your mouth" and the kid did...or not but a lot of kids eat gold fish on dares.Now that could be deadly!

This is so true... I don't think I have ever left without something living that I didn't go in with.

It depends on your location, many cities prohibit owning them outright. It's been increasing in the recent years, I have no idea why though.

And no turtle can be bought or sold, regardless of size. That one I know, I work at at pet store... we have the NJDEP's postings plastered up everywhere (sadly, their lists get longer and longer each year... ). The stores will lose their licensing if caught doing so (or so say their almighty proclamations, I've yet to see it actually enforced). They're used to be exceptions for a few turtle species, but I don't know if that changed, the new paperwork we just posted up makes no mentioning of exceptions now.

Edit: Not trying to dissuade you or anything, personally I think going out to the reptile show in PA would be your best bet. There's a bunch of great vendors going, they've already been listing their stuff up on FB.
