What you guys pay? I ordered a 55micron nylon mesh for 9$ shipped i beleive off of ebay. Gotta pick it up as I had it dropped off at the parents. Tonights gonna be fun! Maybe 1 day, 1 micron:headbang2:nilly:;):D

The finer the filter the faster it plugs up. Most people run 100-200 for mechanical filtration and use a 50 or so to make the water super clear. There is such a thing as over filtering though.

I use diatom filters from time to time on my tanks which is capable of filtering 1 micron. The ick fungus is larger then 1 micron and is therefore filtered out. Along with many good things.

If you run 1 micron your gonna have to clean that sock every few minuets or it will fill with water and backflow and may flood your fish area depending on how your filter is set up.

Just a warning.

haha ill go as far as changing it once a day. Iv been using a intex pool pump with cartridge filter and I have been changing that everyday. The water looked GREAT, but I got tired of emptying the pump to take the cartridge out, putting a new one in, then soaking the old one etc. So now i took the catridge out and have the sock hanging on the outlet. If that clogs if just goes back into the tank. I bet a 25 micron will work for a few days:)

Anyway, my dad suggested something. Pools use mesh bags to on the leaf vacs. He said from what they have used, go down to 5 micron

Not sure of this micron size but its $5.80 for a 24"x17" bag

exactly what i was going to say

what exactly "good" can get filtered out of the water?

Took 12 hrs to plug the 50 up. Rinse it in hot water, everything came right off.

Man this 50 micron is beginning to be a pita. Twice today I had to wash it, morning then after work. I guess rinsing off didnt do to good the 2nd time so I am gonna have to actually wash it this time grr. I expected these things to get like... DIRTY. I see stuff in it, but its not wow thats nuts dirty. Its just "looks slightly dirty"

Id say the same as filter floss. Dont use socks though, or wash clothes. I have used both I used a sock on my 180 years ago and eventually the socks just falls apare in your hands. Filtered the water great though!

I did the wash cloth on my current 330gal a week ago, and within that week I had red strings all over the tank. No more experimenting for me :)

They will get nasty, just give it some time :D

I wait till they are about to overflow before I change em out. I can get a couple days onna 50 and that is with an overstocked overfed mixed large Hap/ mbuna 210G tank.

I have 200, 100 and 50 micron socks and cannot tell which one is in use by looking at the water collumn but by how quickly it overflows.

Mine overflows before it even gets super dirty. Right now its overflowing back into the tank, makes a cool waterfall:D

That will happen with the super fine ones. The water can't flow through fast enough for most of the flow rates required on "monster" tanks.
