Where to buy Hyalella azteca?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The critter supplier got back to me and wont ship except by fedex because "we've just not had good
success with other shipping methods". I just may fork over the $75ish to get a culture from them so that I can start selling cultures that didn't come from a nasty pool of parasites bitten scuds => I guess some of the past sellers stopped shipping these because they can arrive dead so easily =<

Got the scuds they arrived double bagged and ice cold! After warming in a bowl they started moving. Now to see if I can keep them alive to use as feeders! That said I have a 10 gallon tank filled when fresh tap water thats been vigorously bubbling for 1-1/2 days... Today I took the lid off and could still smell the tap water smell so I added a couple cap fulls of Amquel+.

The green wall behind the tank makes it look like its turning green like all the rest => The water is still clear. Just thought I would update with a pic... Best I could get is an overall screenshot with a zoom in on the leaf stem more than 1/2 of the scuds have decided to land on.

They range in size from about 1/4" when resting to *maybe* 3/8" when swimming for the biggest ones. I notice quite a few young and mating pairs so just going to take time to get a swarm I hope. The leaf litter and clump of grass is prooving to be sufficient as they seem to like it all. I put in a flake of food and they will eat that to.

A thought I had about scuds and their ability to exist primarily on things like decaying plant matter is that they might have some potential as a cultured live food source for aqua culture. What do you think? IMO the only way to make it work would be to have control of several large cultures of the scuds that adult fish can be moved into once the scuds have populated. Just keep moving the adult fishes from culture to culture until harvest time. Maybe a net in well established cultures would proove to be easiest.

How is your culture doing?

Did anyone find a good place to buy some now a days? I had scuds a long time ago and it was by accident. But now that I want some of these guys, its hard to find. Can anyone help me out?

I have a tankful of scuds. I use them to clean off the algae on some of my plants. I drop the algae covered plants in, and two days later they are algae free. The scuds even eat black beard algae off of my anubias plants.

Hi Joe. Are your scuds the Gammarus or the smaller azteca? Just making sure. I sent a message at diablodjinn but if he doesn't have any, would you mind selling me some?

Man I am eager to try these. I want to culture them to feed to my apistos and I fear the gammarus is too big for them so I opted to go for azteca.

A recent move has all my cultures scaled down but I'm getting back into it and getting better cultures going. My 10 gallon tank has 100's of scuds in it now =) Did take awhile to get that many tho!

@martialtheory I got your email and replied back
