Ok got to get my 125 cycled and I want to know where can I purchase Ammonia from. Give me some brands and what not. I will be using cycled media mostly bio in my Eheim 2217 and my Emp 400 is just running all sponges and foams. I have never done a fishless cycle before only goldies to cycle the tank with lots of water changes. I want to secure the cycling before adding my cichlids from Rapps. Thanks a bunch.:)

why buy it? get it free! add a ton of guppies to the tank...get your ammonia...add your cichlids...no more guppies. if you're going to use cycled filter media...no need to cycle

Hmmm...I kind of agree...
If using cycled filtered media it's not that necessary to do a fishless cycle.
That's why I've yet to even try a fishless cycle, I have so much cycled media it's ridiculous, so when I set up a tank the ammonia never spikes high enough to bother most fish, or lasts very long.

If you want to find ammonia just look anywhere that sells cleaning supplies. Make sure to get pure ammonia with no surfactants and you should be good to go.

No, it's not a joke.

It's one of the best sources of ammonia :)

Have you been drinking today? :screwy: :grinno:

Seriously though, I don't recommend peeing in your tank...

Yes, it's an ammonia source...uh...do you really want that to be your ammonia source?

Adding ammonia increases the strength and time it takes to achieve a full cycle. A normal fish cycling takes longer and can't compete with a fishless cycle because there isn't as much ppm of ammonia in the tank when first setup with fish. However there is almost instantanious supply of high ppm ammonia. That's why I want to do it that way. Also it will speed up the seeding time of new filter media.

This thread is for advice not joking. Please give informative information next time. :) Pee is ammonia but also is very harmful to any animal if injested enough.

I'm about to do the same thing (fishless cycle). I thought there was a specific product made for this that you just pour in. If I remember correctly, it contains the benficial bacteria needed to break down ammonia and nitrates and will have your tank fully cycled in 2 days. I just can't remember what the product is called.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

bio spira is the name I believe and you have to make sure that it has been refrigerated the whole time or other wise it wont work...

as for w/fish cycle it takes the same amount of time as a fishless cycle, I did mine with fish with ammo-lock and at least 1 50% WC a day and it was done in just shy of 4 weeks and not a single fish died nor was stunted...

I tried 30 guppies in my 100g that I'm cycling right now. It didn't work out so well for them. Within a week I had one adult left and now it decided to have about 7 babies. I'm gonna go look for some more fish today for the cycle.
