Just got back to keeping them .. so mine are tiny but I find lots of decor so line of sight is broken up .. rocks caves bog wood etc .. pairs can cause trouble if you want a community

Keep them in groups. In nature they live in groups. The behavior is very entertaining and they seem to be happier than kept alone.
Like any other cichlids, tank size makes a difference. I have a group of 4 in my 150g. I probably should add some more.

That's what I thought. I see a lot of singles and pairs. Is there a suggested m/f ratio?
I had a FM and Passion (sorry not sure correct names)hang out together in a community tank, and they were very entertaining just the 2.

I'm not entirely sure if there is a proper ratio. Since they are hard to sex, it's best to buy a group and see what happens. I'd imagine too many males could be a problem. But they do establish a pecking order, and will constantly scwable for dominance. The fighting never results in any damage. Like mentioned, breeding pairs can cause some trouble, but in a big enough tank it will be fine. In fact I'm hoping to get a pair in my community tank.
Also I'd like to add sand is good for them being that they are an earth eating cichlid.
