I have a 240 gallon tank with a wet/dry sump for filtration. I initially used that by itself and it kept the tank clean but as i added more and more fish i think i need to add something else for mechanical filtration.

My stand looks nice, but it has a poor design. I have 4 small cabinet doors to get under the tank that are 10 x 22 inches each. That means that an FX5 would probably have to sit on the side of the tank rather than underneath and this would not be ideal....

I was thinking a Fluval 405 or Rena XP4 should fit based on the dimensions I was finding online...

I am pretty upset because I was just sold on adding an FX5 when I realized that it wouldn't fit through the cabinet door.

What's the best bang for your buck that would fit through a 10 x 22 inch hole?

Get an fx5 do it right. Or do a sump. Ya my door opening is 16 and it works but is not the best.

Well, i do have a sump and the FX5 won't fit under the tank.

The sump i think it sufficient for the bio load in my tank, but its not getting the detritus off the bottom very well. I have some small pumps for water movement but no matter how i adjust them it just ends up swirling the detritus around and not getting it into the overflow.

I really don't want to have a canister filter that isnt concealed by the cabinet...

for mech . filtration you might be best off with a big hob, they are easy to maintain.I'd go with an ac110,or even 2 of them

the other side to my issue is the eurobrace on my acrylic tank. I have an acrylic on the top that goes 8 inches on from the back before the openings for the lids, which i keep closed. If i go with a canister i would either have to fit it under the lids or drill a hole in the top toward the back. an hob would require i make a huge hole which i am not confident in doing....using a hole saw i think i can manage something for the pipes for the intake an return of a canister filter.

I think i am leaving toward a Rena XP4 since it should fit through the door of the cabinet..anyone have any thoughts on this filter? I might start a new thread.

What about a Marineland Magnum 350? They're small, easy to maintain, and do a pretty kickass job. I run 3 of them on a 125 and have never had an issue. I'm fairly certain I've seen them used for ~50 bucks.

the xp4 is a nice canister. for the price tho id personaly buy the cfs 500 off ebay. it moves a S ton of water. all the kinks have been worked out and is the best bang for the buck out there imo. you can buy it and free shipping for under 60 bucks. will fit easily under your stand. the xp4 is 4 times the price and rena replacemnet parts cost an arm n a leg.
