Which canister filter?

Ok magnum. Have one and first the little basket deal is stupid cheap. Falls apart and overtime your carbon more or less falls out because what little pressure it has pushes the plastic strainer inward to make a mess of it. Even if you pack it full of media. The plastic parts all all cheap crack and the seams spread start on the tubes. The other cartridges are nice. Hard to clean out. Take allong time to rinse all the stuff off. But clog super super fast. They say good for 100 gallons. On a 30 gallon tank I can't even get a week of filtering and that is with an on back filter working also. Overall small size and filtering capacity. For the cost 120.00 an fx5 is about 230 and will do the work of four magnums any day. I might use a magnum in a salt water tank with some rock in it for Bio but never as a real filter.

Wow said like a preacher. +1 fx5 all the way or if ur willing to spend almost 2x the $ for 10% more performance then eheim is ur brand, different features but they both wipe the *** of anything u can buy at petsmart, unless ur petsmart is top notch and carries them. Ac line is the only other brand that id ever trust at a lfs.

The xp4 is a decent filter for bio but the flow rate is junk. But the real question is why do you want all that stuff in your filter? Just because you can't see it in the tank doesn't mean it isn't fouling your water. Just arrange the powerheads so it all congregates in one spot and vacuum it up. You and your fish are a lot better off this way. Too many people rely too heavily on filters when in all reality you are better off just vacuuming it up. It means less nitrates and fewer filter cleanings. Mechanical filtration is the least important factor in proper filtration IMO you are better off with good bio and lots of waterchanges:)

water change and filter cleaning schedule is once per week. I actually enjoy getting in there and vacuuming up the poop :) With my sump, it is really easy to clean the filter pads. I rinse out the porous ones once a week and i have 4 sets of the 10 micron stuff so once every three weeks the dirty ones go into the clothes washer and come out white.

I currently have 3 powerheads. The one is too powerful and tends to kick up the sand no mater where i place it.

Without any powerheads running, the large pieces end up on the return end against the wall. This happens to be the side most people see first because it is closest to the entrance to the room.

With the smaller two running the poop seems to swirl around in the in the water column and always gets back around the return rather than the drain.

I feel like i have been constantly fiddling with the positioning of the powerheads for months now....which is why i was thinking a canister might help.

I'm not sure what happened to your filters... I've had no similar issues. 2 of mine are stuffed with pot scrubbies, the other with purigen. All three have the blue mech sleeve. My fish are all huge and crap human size turds. I constantly feed them huge mealworms and nightcrawlers (2 of the most dirty foods) and large goldfish/minnows/crayfish and they eat almost every day. Mind you I have only the 3 magnums. No wetdry, nothing else but 2 powerheads. I do 50% w/c on weekends. I clean the filters rarely, and not all the same time. Clear water/good parameters. Sucks you havent had similar luck. Sorry to hear.
