Which filters are better? Aquaclear or...

I agree ^^^ buy them and then decide $20 for 2 AC 70 you can't go wrong, worst case you have back ups for when a filter craps out.

I cannot talk about marineland because I have never used one of those, on the other hand I have had Aquaclears for some time and they are absolutely great.

The main advantage of aquaclear above other brands is that Aquaclear do not force you to buy cartridges over and over, aquaclear comes with an sponge that lasts a lot and when it worns out you just replace it, not necesarly with the one of the same brand and type, the system of the AC filters allows you to customize and use as media almost whatever you want.

In my aquaclear 110 I use in the first stage the big sponge it comes included, which is very good, above it I placed a 3/4 inch thick polyester fiber carpet that I cut to fit in and above it I placed anothoter 1/2 inch thick more dense sponge, then lots of biorings and there you go, a superb filter!!!!.

I wouldnt place any filter that uses those cartridges of plastic frame and some floss and carbon attached to them and that you have to be buying and buying above an Aquaclear at all.

The emperor 400 seems to do a good Job, so what if I kept that running and then threw on two AC 70's? Would the 2 70's be as efficient at having a single AC 110?

I have 1 AC 70 working in my son's turtle tank, it previously filtered my 55 gal tank and I decided to get an AC110 just for the 55g tank.

Regarding my experience I can tell you that two AC 70 can't be better than 1 AC110.

In theory two AC 70 deliver a bigger flwo rate than one AC 110, however flow rate do not always mean efficient filtration and AC110 can hold more mecanical and biological media than two AC70 simply because it is bigger, thus a 110 would work for longer before cloging under heavy bioload conditions unlike the two AC70 that would clog faster.

Cheers.

I'd buy an Aquaclear 110 and scratch the 3 Ac70s. Pointless using more energy using 3 filters and cluttering the back wall of the aquarium with intakes when one could do the job of 3.
Keep your Emp400 on there but switch your cartridge media out for some Aquaclear foam and biomax and set the media up according to the flow through the filter. Add an extra foam insert to the Ac110 and that should handle your tank depending on what you're putting in it. Then later add a canister for some sweet overfiltration.. :D

I'd also do two AC110s on a 75. I have 70s, 110s, and a bunch of Penguin 350s. The 110s are hands down my favorite. The only thing I do not like is that they will not self prime (in a reasonable time frame) after a water change, but the 350s do quickly.

I will never buy cartridges again. I still run a few Penguins....but I just replace the blue floss for pennies.
