I figured the nerite snails might become food for the HRP. Is this actually possible and if so can I do anything about it?
It's possible but only if "all" the fish allow it. Each fish will have it's own personality so while most may not like their taste/smell ya may end of with an odd ball that craves it. It's just down to a roll of the dice to see what will happen with that. Granted atleast nerites are pretty cheap so even if they don't work out it won't be like it's going to break the bank for ya, it just means you'll have to try out something else. Plenty of small and cheap algae eaters out there, you'll find something that'll work eventually.

Just try which ever one ya want the most first and just go down the list from there if they don't work out.

I know this seems out of the blue, but can't I just fit a female convict in a 30 gallon because they are smaller than the males?

I had nerites in my tank with HRPs the whole year it was running.

The only drawback to nerite snails is they still lay eggs. These eggs never hatch, lack of salt in the water. Anyways so after a while you will start getting these white spots all over you decor.

The problem with females, even solo is they still lay eggs. And Cons do this every four weeks or so. Even with no males around when they hit maturity they will start laying. This is the problem, when she does lay all bets are off and will defend said eggs with her life.

These are Nanolutae in a 6ft 125gal tank.
Notice now the pair has all other fish in half of the tank. Now image a mama Con doing this in a 30.

Single female with no dithers should work. I would use some plants fake or real on the surface to provide cover. To replace the sense of security that the dithers would have provided. Also plenty of hiding places for her.
