which fish aren't worth their cost

People want to outlaw hybrids? Why can't you just mind your own business and not buy them if you don't like them? Obviously someone wants them or their wouldn't be a market for them.

On topic, I think jack dempsies are a great bargain. My LFS sells 1" ones 3 for $5. I can quite justify the price for a zebra pleco although I would really like to have a couple.

im not big into the pbass either. but i disagree on the dat. i had a small dat and weened him off of live foods. after that he became the most personable fish ive ever had. my tank blew out and he died, i'd get another one but i doubt it will be able to live up to the old one.

Flowerhorns I believe are extremely overpriced. Kinda wierd how the more deformed it is the more the price. There's shops near me selling 4"ers for $250-$400.

Interesting thread, but I don't see any fish being over priced at all. I think a little research of how they get the fish, how much does their LFS bought their fish for etc etc etc might make you re-think.

Simple as this, why are some Michael Jordan basketball cards with holographic can cost anywhere from $50-$300? And its made out of some type of paper with stickers and laminated stuff? It's the same routine with the fish. Rareness and population has everything to do with it. You name it ;)

My LFS ups the price of fish 4X before selling them..

yea all lfs up the price they pay their distributer a certain percentage varying by store. 4x is pretty common. the higher margin's help pay for fish loss, upkeep, and of course profit. many people would be shocked to see how little stores pay for a lot of fish.

I think discus are overpriced. I have never and will never pay $40 for a fish that will never grow to more than five inches long.

Adult CA/SA cichlids often cost many times more than juveniles in fish stores. I saw an adult RD/midas for $150, when you would never be able to sell one for that much on the internet. A really really nice show quality specimen, maybe. But not a fish that someone traded in because it got too big.
