Which gar grows the fastest next to gators?

et c'est quoi ce plateau, Monsieur Richard?

after that year of growth spurt, from experience only though, i noticed that they're really thin looking... do they fill up after a few years? i used to have a Long nosed gar... and it grew pretty quick but it was thin... it would only look fat when i has sumthin like a feeder inside of it... what i meant was how long would it take (after the initial year) for it to fill up noticably?

(sorry for starting a new line of questioning.. but let's save cyberspace!:D)

my gar fatten up as they grow. i got my trop about 6 months ago at 5" and he is now 13" long and very fat. what do you feed your gar?

solomon (e_americanus) told me before that longnose starts to fatten up only after it reaches a certain size (age). don't remember how big/old though. maybe he or richard (polypterus) can elaborate...

i'm sure richard could expound on some experience with longnoses and their 'fattening' as they had several at the belle isle aquarium back in the day.
my observations are based mainly on wild specimens (as would some of richard's) as we have sampled many and it's only really larger specimens that look "fat" which is a relative term in and of itself. the longnose gar has the slimmest morphotype of any of the gars, just like the Cuban and gators are naturally quite stout.

reGARding fastest growth rate, my first instinct would be to say longnose after gator (as richard mentioned earlier) as well. all though i have not kept as good of records recently, i had one easily grow from 3" to 10" in about 20 days a few years ago. longnoses can easily reach 18" in their first year/many months (given the right conditions) and then seem to plateau. the other species seem to reach their plateau at a smaller length, at least in captivity. keep in mind, some of those other species will grow in girth as opposed to primarily body length as well...so perhaps overall mass would be a good estimator, and in that case you'd have to weigh your fish :) --

Our longnose has been slow growing so far. Only grown about 2" since we got him a few months ago actually, but he just recently got off of live fods, so I see his growth rate increasing here over the ext few months. Our T-gar by far was the fastest grower we have had. I guess it depends on the individual fish and what their diet/environment are like. Longnose seem to be a thinner gar in general. Ours only ever looks bulky when it has food in its belly.
