yes, it definitely depends on the overall environment (water quality, feeding, temp, basically all the eco-factors) in terms of how fast the gar will grow, but with all things being equal, and in several 'trials' with several different fishes, a longnose will out grow a tropical gar in terms of length quite easily. weight may be a different issue, but it's probably at least close.KaraJo;1216904; said:Our longnose has been slow growing so far. Only grown about 2" since we got him a few months ago actually, but he just recently got off of live fods, so I see his growth rate increasing here over the ext few months. Our T-gar by far was the fastest grower we have had. I guess it depends on the individual fish and what their diet/environment are like. Longnose seem to be a thinner gar in general. Ours only ever looks bulky when it has food in its belly.
a ROUGH continuum of gar growth rates, from fastest to slowest (again, relatively speaking, and just generalization) probably goes as follows:
alligator ------- longnose ---- Cuban/tropical --- Florida/spotted/shortnose
also keep in mind that in terms of length, the longnose gar is the second biggest gar--
