Which Gar Species would be ok with a RTC?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no no no no no.
the rtc will eat the gar or (when the gator gets large) the gator will eat the others.
catfish are generally a no no with gar

bad combo for the long run as the growth rates of fishes involved will never appropriately match up. save yourself a headache and the fishes the trauma and skip it. if you want to rescue the gar, do so in a different tank. there is no point getting a gator in this scenario.--

Ya I was thinking that too. Worried the Gator Gar would kill all my fish in the long run. I guess I'll just have to skip it until then...

I am having the same issue... rtc with an aro and a gator gar? I keep the rtc well fed so he won't eat any thing else.

22" rtc and 15" aro with a pair of 7" oscars in main tank. 9" gator gar and 4 - 5"-7" cats (rtc, tsn, 2x rtc/tsn hybrid) in grow out tank.

A 7" oscar looks tiny next to a large rtc. the aro is fast enough to get away from the rtc but the gar is not. I can say that the rtc only come to the surface when he sees me but I don't know if putting the gar in is a good idea! I will probably put in the gar in a few months when I need the grow out tank to breed g severums...

we share a common dilemna but I currently own the mix of fish in question...

I am getting my "big" tank over the summer I guess I could keep the gar in my current main tank and wait to move them around...

wouldn't trust a rtc to keep his mouth off smaller fish just because of that logic.

gator gar can easily eat your other cats...now and in the near future...

not really a very good reason to introduce the gar into the tank. it's a poor combo as i've already mentioned...if you really have no where eles to add the gator, give it up for adoption. if you didn't have facilities that meet the requirement to keep a gator gar long-term, or at least have a contingency plan, you really should have thought twice before getting such a demanding fish.

I have a 14 inch RTC with fish ranging from 4 inches! They are carnivores when not fed right! My rtc has also never eaten a feeder! and wont even if its a tiny goldy he is a nice giant! I also have a 18 inch florida gar with him they are like best friends! I believe rtc and gar look great together!

:duh:

okay in all seriousness, fishman great that your rtc is able to mix with 4" fish. but is that the norm for red tail cats? i'm no expert on cats(this is once again people, a gar forum) but if i'm not wrong they are known to attempt to fit oversized prey into their mouths. as much as they might look great together, that bit of info doesn't exactly help the op or the later posters who've asked for advise on the species of gar that work well with rtc. my stand is that unless both fish have slown down to almost no growth rates (perhaps 4-5') and have a substantial amount of space in the enclosure to diffuse aggression/attempted predation, it is not a good idea to attempt this mix. this is perhaps why public aquariums or members with very large ponds are able to pull this off (perhaps giving other members the idea that it is a good combo). this same combo, under the circumstance of a "regular" home aquarium is not likely to work at all. correct me if i'm wrong.
