Hey if anyone has pics of their tanks with sand, id love to see em, Im really consitering doing this, the only thing holding me back is that Im afraid converting a 125g tank from gravel to sand will be a nightmare.

Almost all Africans have a sand bottom in the wild, as do many South American cichlids. I dont know about Centeral American cichlids but they enjoy sifting and mucking about with sand.

How awful is it to convert a large already established gravel tank? Withought damaging my cannister filter? And what kind of sand is recomended?

dont use the wrong sand because my tank has gone from clear to cloudy to clear to cloudy and it was recently crystal clear for 3-4 days when i rewashed the sand but now its starting to go hazy again.
im using fine quartz sand which is labeled for reptiles. i was told it was ok to use but guess not. find out what sand works.

Can anyone tell me whats the best sand to use to avoid cloudy water? What about the sand that is used in saltwater tanks?

I've got a really course mix of tiny river rocks and sand on top too, need the Geo's to sort it out for me because it's mainly 1mm or so sand.

id mix both otgethe, sand and gravel, me3dium sized gravel, 2 bags of sand, 1 bag of gravel

If you dont have any plants, life gets easy from there. Take many accurate pictures of the tank before ahnd and take everything out, but place them neatly in order to where they would be if they were to be in the tank.

Then just use a bit bucket, net, hand whatever and remove it as so. Once its all gone, do a 40-50% water change to remove the cloudiness and place all the decor back in. This is where the pictures come in to help you remember where they were placed.
