looks good but wait until those cichlids kick the sand up in your filter intakes. my largest tank is a 180 which is 24 high. i have heavy black sand but my cichlids still kick it up in my filters. ive replaced both impellers and when i do filter cleanings there is alot of sand thats comes out. maybe that pool filter sand is heavier then my black sand.

Well I think what I got might actually be one step above sand, the little pieces seem slightly bigger than what you would find in typical sand, and I raised my intake up as much as I could. Take a look if you can for me, does that look high enough?

I use gravel now because its cheaper, but sand is the way to go. Just put a sponge prefilter on it and youll be good to go. That way you have sand and you dont destroy your impellers.

i have my intakes up high and tried prefilters all that would do is get clogged and my filters wouldnt run up to par.

i dont even see your intake. all i see is the heater. the more i look at it that sand almost looks like super small pea size gravel. if thats the case your good to go.

What you are thinking is the heater is probably the intake, Ive got too heaters, each at either end of the tank positioned horizontally (side to side?), the thing you are seeing in the middle is in fact my filter intake. AS far as the sand, if its indeed what you said it is, thats a relief!

just keep an eye on your fish and see if they kick ur substrate up and stir it. if they do that intake def needs to be raised. mine are only 7 inches down in a 24 inch deep tank and im still picking it up.

Sand looks better but increases the risk of scratched tanks and filter issues. Gravel for me...still looks good.
