Both are good for the polys, both have pros and cons.

Pellets boast complete nutrition and are convinient, but they take a while to get soft and it seems a hard pellet is annoying to the bichirs.

Frozen foods are high in protein, but may be lacking certain vitamins and minerals which the fish need for proper growth.

The fish really enjoy the fleshy/chewy frozen foods though.

:iagree: I usually feed frozen, but that's cuz I find cheap frozen Ghost Shrimps at Asian Markets.:D

frozen ghost shrimp! that's awesome, how much is it and how much do you get?

I have to check the seafood city to seeif they have it. I've seen the little white fish but not shrimp.

Frozen foods actually have their own natural vitamins and minerals, but their are some stuff in the frozen food that you may also not want that you just don't know. Most frozen foods have higher thiamenase and cause vitamin B1 deficiencies, which cause on stunting their growth, illness and premature death. That's why you don't use frozen foods as their staple food. Pellets on the other hand are man made and they already mix the stuff that your fish will need, thus it make them a good stable food.

Excellent point! Thank you for the information King-eL, vitamin B1 deficiency maybe be a bigger proplem than we are currently aware of.

I just did a quick search into this and came across a very well written article, however low on cited sources or data. It explains why thiaminase is a concern to aquarists who use raw fish as a large part of the diet for their predatory fish, and symptoms of vitamin B1 deficiency.

Check it out: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume_6/volume_6_1/thiaminase.htm

I have always advised keeping the diet varied, with a quality pellet food making up a large part of the diet. This article makes me realize that my ratio is off and I will be increasing the ammount of pellets in the diet, to the ammount of frozen foods.
