I guess I am partial to Umbee-but one thing I have noticed is that unless I have target fish or other cichlids Dovii tend to be really shy-the last one I had would hide in the cave every time I went to put food-the Umbee on the other hand bangs on the glass and yes I have been bitten by my 14 incher and I bleed. Another thing is that Dovii tend to be more sensitive to changes in their water where as Umbee are in my opinion more adaptive to different environments and can take harrassment from other fish-one thing about Dovii is if they arent top dog they tend to really stress. Most Dovii I have don't really get aggressive til around 10 inches I have had my Dovii get abused by Red Devils and even a GT!
yea thats why i think people vote for dovii's more as their more available to the fish hobby unlike many people will never find male umbee's as their very hard to find...and not many have adults or close to a foot long...i only know of few and it includes you my friend since you have a 14"er...and many only see what an dovii could do but never seen a umbee's side "yet" maybe if you guys seen a full grown one you'd have another opinion of other fishes...but yes if i did have my male dovii still i would have voted dovii myself but im going with umbee due to the fact that i still have my young male...and am seeing lots of more aggression that the male dovii that i had. Everyone's opinion to this poll is greatly valued
IMO I put them on par at equivalent size but the fact that I have never seen an Umbee attain the size of some Dovii is what made me pick Dovii.This Umbee pictured form cichlid scene is one of the larger ones you'll see and a nice specimen at that but I have never seen an Umbee the size of the Dovii shown here and many others like him.The Dovii is 28"+

but isn't that in a giant enclosure than what most hobbyist keep their doviis in? if its over a couple thousand gallons it may be why its so huge...but i know thats their usual size for male dovii's =] i wonder if their putting steroid extract into the dovii's food (0____0) lol nahhh maybe not...its huge and beautiful...
