Which is most likely to get along with angels?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
do yall think a GT would have better luck? there are some little 1-2in GTs at petco right now and one of them is showing some amazing color for being so small, he is definitely going to look amazing when older and then i could keep it as a SA tank, though i would only do it if it absolutely couldnt work with my argentea or midas, though im still not completely positive if i am ready to actually do it and make the decision and start selling fish this is defintely all still in the planning stages, but seeing that little male GT showing all that color really reminded me of the male i had that jumped and i did always want to get another one...

That sounds like a plan. Since the GT will grow up from such a small size with the Angels any agression should me minumized. Two beautiful fish also. Did you see the pic I posted of the baby I just got.

in a 5ft tank do you guys think the angels would kill each other? if i do change my stock im thinking the GT with like 6 wild scalare and possibly a couple altums down the road, GT would be smaller than the angels at introduction and i would put them in the tank first, if i put plenty of tall fake plants going the depth of the tank for them to swim in and everything would those of you more experienced with angels see them having a problem with each other? and what would be a good kind of schooling tetra to add to the tank, i kind like lemon tetras but not sure if they would get big enough or are fast enough to evade the GT, so that would be the stock for cichlids and i think im going to get a couple more pictus and maybe some kind of nice pleco...

To be honest, angels and discus are usually found among tree roots and driftwood in the wild. Mine used to shred plants. They didn't eat them but they loved to destroy them. I've seen angels in planted tanks but it wasn't a good experience for me.

The GT may or may not work depending on its personality. The angels should be fine in a 5ft tank. I would avoid true altums because they require a large, deep tank. Scalare or "Peruvian altums," which are actually just a variety of scalare, should be OK.

A 5ft tank would be fine.
I used to keep Discus & Angels exclusivly before getting into the the bigger guys. I still keep two planted tanks one has 3 wild type Angles in them was 4. I always do a planted tank. I like Crypts on the bottom, and plant Valisneria, Ludwigia in the back and Amason swards as a center piece from time to time. Also grow some Java fern on the drift wood. Water sprite is great to get things going it sucks up nitriates and nitrites like a sponge and is also good floated but growes like crazy. I used Harlaquin Rasboras and Glo-lite tetras also Blue Tetras all at different times I liked the look they gave the tank and get big enough not to get eaten. I liked a black background although I've used the planted looking background too. I used about an inch of plant substrate and small gravel mixed with PFS on top to anchor the plants. I liked using one Bushy nosed pleco and about a 12 Amano shrimp (find big ones or the angels will pick them off) for algea duty along with an SEA gotta find a real one the black stripe down the center will go all the way to the end of the tail. Over my planted 65 I use 130W CP with a 10K/6700 combination light. I'm in work now but if you're interested in what I'm talking about I could post some pics later when I get home. Also a small school of one of the smaller corys are nice crusing along the bottom. I use to, but not anymore keep a mesh bag of Pete Moss in one of the canaster compartments. it was good for about 3 months then I would put some new Pete in. I would get insperation from the T. Amano type planted tanks and for a while I had things going so good I only used a small HOB filter for circulation and to hold the bag of Pete. I often think about doing another elaboate set up actually once everything is balanced it's not too much work at all. There is alittle more to it than what I'm writing here, balancing the ferts, CO2 & lighting but if you enjoy it it's fun and the results are amazing. I don't say much about this stuff because I spend most of my time here in the SA/CA section.

I should add the above would work for an angel fish only tank the GT would not work very well with plants, mine attacks the plastic plants once in a while. If you decided to to do a stright A tank you could make a stunning display. But I am a sucker for a big male GT.

yeah thanks for the info but im not really wanting to do fully planted, i was thinking about it at one point when i was redoing this current tank over a year ago and then saw all that needed to go into it and the lights i would need and just think it would be way to much work (and cost for the lights...) but yeah i have a couple plants in there right now and might add some java moss or something small like that to the wood that doesnt need a lot of light but i dont know, its mainly going to be fake plants though. and yeah i got the little GT and he was eating within 10min of being put into the grow out tank and isnt shy at all, i want to make sure he is healthy and everything and no dreaded mysterious white poo of the GT syndrome before i make any plans around him, and Montess told me about a man here in NC that imports wild angels and plecos and tetras and stuff so if i go with it, im going to order from him and maybe see what tetras he has at the time i order and since he is only like 5 hours away shipping shouldn't cost that much

so i got back from my parents place for the weekend and found the little GT had jumped :( i dont know what it was but one of my pictus had jumped out of the big tank as well, i haven't had any fish jump since my old male jumped 9months ago and now 2 are gone in one trip away from the house AHHH bad things always have to happen when im away ugh. but yeah so im going to return him and see if they have any other really good looking GTs that seem as healthy as he seemed to be and if not then i may just continue as planned and try with the argentea

That's beat! What do you mean return him? You're gonna take a dried up dead fish back to the store? Do they cover not keeping them in water?

lol yup they sure do, got me a new little terror and making sure to cover up the little hole around the filter so he cant jump out, also got some more pictus and a little banjo cat they had, but yeah the guy was like im not sure if we can return it if it jumped but its alright i return it anyways lol
