there really isnt such a thing, and no fish really eats waste except scats but they are brackish and that isnt their main diet...

Not really, because food pass thru the scat digestive system so fast, they dont have enough time to digest it. So its normal if they eat back their own waste.

SAE are probably the best algae eater out there hands down. Getting true ones can be a pain, especially if you don't know what you're looking for. Easy to mix them up with flying fox's. The SAE's will eat just about ANY type of algae, including hair algae. So I have to say they are the best algae eaters without a doubt. Only problem is they don't get large enough to keep with most of the fish we MFKers keep. :(

Next would be the plecos, royal, BN's, rubberlips. They are all great at it and do it well.

Fei Feng are top notch, mine is always cleaning my tank. Get large, aren't aggressive, just great fish.

Those are my nominations. :)
how is that possible

There is a fish farm out in the desert that raises some type of bass. They use some type of carp and tilapia to eat the actual **** of the bass before the water is filtered. It was an episode of dirty jobs that I saw this.

I've never heard of a janitor fish, but that would be a good name for the algae eaters I have. These guys keep all the algae down- driftwood, rocks, glass and plants. I've even seen them cleaning the in/out on the xp3 I have filtering their tank. I think the common name they were sold as was chinese algae eater. They get fairly beefy and I've seen one of them chasing away a dempsey that got too close to it.

Yeah, I have a chinese algae eater. As good a job as that thing does, I don't like its color (gold, too commercialized/unnatural). not only that, I fear it when it gets big and territorial (like the characteristics you expressed). I plan to move him to another tank when its done being practical.

A "Janitor fish" is what plecos are called in the Philippines. The 1st time I heard that I laughed my **s off!:ROFL::ROFL:

Yes, they do. I live in Philippines myself and I also did laugh it off.;)

If its brown algae has to be an Otto. I just started a planted tank and was really sucessful at growing lots of brown algae I mean covered. bought a few Ottos and within a couple days its gone. I thought people were exaggerating how good these guys were at brown algae cleanup
