^ this is the best answer to the question. take my dempsey for example. hes about 6" now and he IS the baddest, meanest cichlid ive owned. I've owned at least a half doz JD and they were all pretty tame but THIS one... he hates fish lol. ive had jags, pikes, GTs ect. and though they were grumpy they were nothing like this. he killed a 3" oscar when he was 2" and nearly killed an oscar twice his size (took the oscar several mo. to heal lol) atm i got 2 5" jags and a 6" oscar w/ him and im building a 250gl tank as fast as i can before he kills them. he kills any catfish and keeps my plecos in hidding. hes also the pretiest JD ive had, hes supposed to carry the EB JD gene, maybe thats got something to do with his temper. hes got a jaw like a pittbull too. as far as oscars go ive had at least 6 and all but my current has been killed, and he gets beat daily. ive never had a dovi but basicaly yes a big mean fish is bad, but it comes down to individual fish personality. just like people...
