which large(ish) SA center piece fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I really wish I'd built the tank larger so I could accommodate some of the larger species, like an Oscar or a H. Psittacus, but I had to bargain with the live-in girlfriend to get this tank in the living room. literally had to sell her on every foot of the tank and compromised on the size I have, and I even made it a foot longer than she agreed to (hahah). but really would love more space. oh well

I mean your tank sound pretty big to me... If I understood correctly with both arms of the L combined it is a total of 10ft long, right? I think you could definitely keep some of the bigger fish you are eyeing up in it.

Honestly sounds like you have the room for either as long as filtration is adequate and there aren't too many other additions. Pretty much sounds like a 75 on angle with a 125 as far as the footprint, minus a few inches in height (I'm sure that there are tanks that exact size but I'm drawing a blank). No reason you couldn't put a H. Psittacus in there. Even though I love Oscars I wouldn't suggest one with plants, every O I've owned loves to redecorate, but my H. Psittacus seems content with the way I decorate.

Make sure to post pics and let us know what you end up getting!

I will definately post pictures once it comes together more.
So you think I have room? 18" would be enough turning space for a possibly 15" fish? I know I would have lots of running room I just thought they might feel cramped.
As for filtration I was planning an fx6, which I think would be sufficient someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I didn't have a problem keeping my O in a 125 (same footprint) and I'm sure most fish keepers would find the space more than adequate. That's not even accounting for the extra room you have on the short side. With the true parrot being the slow growers they are and the fact that I have seen very few parrots as large as big O's, I think you'll be alright.

...Just my .02 of course.

With the red heads growing out to about 6" or so along with the 2 L's you were talking about around 9-10" fully grown I'd say you'd be pretty much fully stocked (maybe some room for a group of small shoalers).

As far as filtration the fx6 should be sufficient but you may think of adding another small canister to help out with mechanical filtration, especially because of the 90 degree turn in the tank.

Oscar fish.................A school of Discus..................

an lfs I like is getting some uaru amphiacanthoides in. would a small group fit in this tank? I was thinking about 4 or so. I realize I might want to slim down the number of geos I have, but for those of you who've kept them, could this work? just for reference the current stock is ~15 geo Tapajos (mostly sub adult), a handful of bronze corys, a couple l091's and some diamond tetras.
