which one is smarter?

To answer the question with my opinion - Jag for sure, due to their more predominantly predatory nature over that of an Oscar, which could be considered omnivorous.

Its hard to think of an intelligent freshwater fish, but I would have to go with either Norhtern Pike or Muskellunge - muskys don't tend to fall for just any lure and both fish are highly active predators that stalk and eat just about everything that enters their environment.

As soon as they're up against another fish their size you see the coward in them right away.
:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

you are a N0ob to fish keeping I see. Jags of equal age and size probably would not cower from an Oscar. They would either destroy it or try and find something to remove the patchouli smell from the water.

Smarter? Define 'smarter'. I'd say any species clever enough to mooch off of us is pretty smart. Jags are very pensive most of the time. They always know more than they're telling you. Oscars can't hide their drives. They are the outspoken student of the school. As far as which would fare better in a learning test, it would vary by individual, I'm sure. O's and Jags are pretty comparable fish. Supposedly Elephant noses and other mormyrids are the most intelligent FW fish in the world. But I think they are just going to brain size/body size ratio for that.

The cowardly Oscar may be alive tomorrow if he runs well enough. The brave Jag my die in battle. Honor is a subjective thing. Survival of the fittest is not.

What's wrong with insulting imaginary fish?

Ditto.

And KnifeGill, read my other posts. I'm definitely not saying that oscars are smarter than Jags, nor am I trying to predict which one would win in a fight.

Yeah, Jags....., Dovii, or most any Parachromis, any Amphilophus. Don't get me wrong Oscars are up there but IMO they get labelled as intelligent just because they're driven by their stomachs. Their constant begging for food is a huge ego stroke for their owners. It makes them feed needed. But why is it that they'll eat anything? Why are they so easy to net? Why do they always think you're about to feed them every time they see you. These are endearing behaviors, no doubt, but signs of intelligence, I think not.
Kind of like a dog vs. cat debate.
my bengal cats are 100 percent trained so wrong example to me to use
