which one is smarter?

oscars are very bright. they recognize their owners. my cousin had one that would start flopping and jumping in the tank whenever people sat down at the dinner table to eat. mine are very intriguing and curious. they seem to THINK, rather than just randomly swim. my arowana swims back and forth and is not very intelligent. he does not seem to be a critical thinker. :0)

you are a N0ob to fish keeping I see. Jags of equal age and size probably would not cower from an Oscar. They would either destroy it or try and find something to remove the patchouli smell from the water.

Love the hippie references.
And yes, Jags are more cunning than Oscars. Your misreading me big time, but it's okay though.

Yes oscars are cool and they make good wet pets but personally I think they are ugly and they are just flat out pigs and gross.

Mannys are in my top 5 favorite cichlids after owning thousands of them literally thousands and raising them they are the coolest cichlid out there no doubt. I just cant get enough of them. definately the better choice. they look ALOT better, they can be extremely aggressive or very docile.

As far as this goes oscars are pigs when they see a human all they see is pellets feeders and more crap that they can shove down there throats. I dont blame them but also MOST cichlids do this. Oscars just go over board with gluttany. My midas practically does backflips for food he even Bangs the lids when I am in the room to get my attention no joke. but this isnt intelligence... it's like a fat kid sayin mommy please can i have one more ice cream does that make him intelligent... no because he knows damn well he doesnt need another.

An intelligent fish is something that is able to efficently hunt for food with wasting little energy, able to raise and care for young and able to protect their species and adapt to thier surroundings rapidly.

This is why I say jags because they meet my criteria.

iv kept jags and oscar, to me jags are my favorite they are stronger and more hardy at the younger age. when i see a full grown oscar i think of it as a ugly fish but was nice when they were little, people saying how oscar have much personality is because the oscar always runs to the front of the tank and beg for food, thats all i ever see them do

I have an oscar and only responsive when its a feeding time, I am thinking of getting a jag as well just to compare between the two

Yeah, Jags....., Dovii, or most any Parachromis, any Amphilophus. Don't get me wrong Oscars are up there but IMO they get labelled as intelligent just because they're driven by their stomachs. Their constant begging for food is a huge ego stroke for their owners. It makes them feed needed. But why is it that they'll eat anything? Why are they so easy to net? Why do they always think you're about to feed them every time they see you. These are endearing behaviors, no doubt, but signs of intelligence, I think not.
Kind of like a dog vs. cat debate.
