I sold these fish to Chang-and after seeing the photos that he posted-I disagree with Ed to a degree....
G. abalios has a striped tail. G. altifrons has spotting. I've never seen a G. abalios with a spotted tail and according to photos by Thomas Weidner and Oliver Lucanus....that fish that I sold him was G. altifrons or G. cf/aff altifrons as Ed stated. It cannot be cf. surinamensis as it only occurs in Suriname according to Weidner. It may be G. cf. altifrons, but I do not believe it to be G. abalios solely due to the tail-although it could be cf/aff abalios. As I stated in the emails that he posted..... They looked like altifrons due to no stripe under the eys, a standard spot on the side and a spotted tail.
I'm going to send the photos to Oliver and see what his take is on them.
The fish in the photo on the auction was a photo of a larger wild G. altifrons "Tocantins" and I'm fairly certain that those facts were stated on the auction. I don't have a link to the auction as it has fallen off of aquabid already.
I did end up refunding him his money.
