Hey everyone.

So to make this as short as possible, i'm thinking of starting off my CA Cichlid adventure with a small Parachromis group in a 140g. I'm planning to buy a group of 5-10 individuals and let a pair form , and then remove the remaining fish.

For the last week i've been reading all i can about the different types of Parachromis, what to do , what not to do and such, but i still feel a little bit unsure as to which of them would suit best as a single pair in a 140 gallon. Only species i've managed to exclude so far is P.Dovii, as they are just a bit too agressive and big. There will be no other fish in the tank, and i have plans upgrading to a 200'ish gal tank in 2-3 years time.

So the question is, what do you guys think? Is there any of the species that would be best suited for this tank type, even if i can't set up a 200g+ tank in the near future and the pair need to stay in the 140g for awhile? Any tips or pointers on setup, or other things i should keep in mind in general? Any input is greatly appreciated. :)

JAGS!!! if i had an empty tank that size and only wanted a pair i would def do some jags, especially aquamojos honduran jags i think he will be giving some fry to rapps soon to sell so you could get some of them they are AWESOME and would do well in that tank for life, either that or a festae pair, they can be kind of shy but if you grow them from small and have some dithers they should be more outgoing and they have great colors, they would also be fine in that tank for life

freddies or loselli both have great color and will not out gow that tank.

I know it's not technically a Parachromis, but, check out Grammodes, lots of people call them Mini Dovii, and they have great color!

Thanks for all the opinions :D

I still have about a week to decide on which species to go for. I'm going over to the lfs (which has excellent quality fish and can order pretty much anything i get the impression) next weekend to place an order. Hopefully i've managed to decide by then.

By the way...how are the males of this group treating their females. Will they stick together for life once bonded as a pair, or is there a chance he might kill her off?

-> Sarah88 : I probably won't get my hands on any of those beatiful Honduran Jags, as i'm located in Norway ^^, but i'm kinda hoping my lfs has any contacts or suppliers that can deliver any location specific Parachromis.

In my experience, male jags can be very aggressive towards their mates ( like most cichlids, Parachromis species tend to mate for life, but that doesn't mean they won't fight) I have to keep a divider in between my pair any time they don't have eggs or fry. It all depends on the pair you have and the conditions they are in ( tank size, tankmates, etc can affect how a pair treats each other)

my freddie pair are great they ruff house alittle when they are breeding but other than that they are always together and very calm. I woold say it depends on the individual fish.
