Which Parachromis pair is best suited for a 140g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you're not dividing your pair, grammodes or otherwise, you're taking a big risk. An incomplete divider that allows the female the go back and forth is the best way to go.

In my experience, grammies are fine mixed with other unlike fish that they don't see as food. You would be able to mix quite a few fish in a 140 with a grammodes pair. Convicts are a good choice.

jags or motas would be my choice for a 140

Still appreciating all the responses. ^^

A note... i don't plan to separate the pair at all, and really hoping they'll do fine together. Ofcourse i see the risk in this...and that despite my effort to keep them calm and happy in their 140 gallon, he might still "dispose" of her after a breeding, or at any other time.

Im just gonna cross my fingers and hope that with a group of 6-10 individuals @ about 2-3 inches a pair will bond up nice and tight, and won't agress eachother too much. I mean the chances has got to be higher of achieving this when doing it like this, rather than buying two or more semi-adult fish and trying to get a pair of these?

My vote has to go to freddies or loisselei. Dovii as you said are far to aggrresive and big. And jags and motas are a coin flip as far as aggresion goes. They can both have extremely aggresive behavior or be fairly doscile. I think the freddies and loisselei are a bit more calm (that's not to say there not parachromis worthy). But from what I have seen are more chill then the other three. I would say they are your best chance for a lifetime pair in a 140 (in my opinion and experiance).

Talked to the guy at the lfs today and got him to check what types of Parachromis were currently available, and after some consideration i ordered 10 Jags which will be arriving next week hopefully.

Thanks to everyone that made the choice a bit easier ^^.

Anyways...love the site and i guess i'm gonna be spending a good amount of time on these forums from now on. As soon as the small jags are settled in the tank i'm gonna post a couple of pictures to get some feedback on tank setup and such too...aswell as get a positive id of the fishes just to be sure i got the right ones.

SWEET cant wait to see the baby jags, i def dont think you will regret it, you cant go wrong with a nice pair of monster jags :) and with that many you should have your choice of the best out of several pairs :)

Jags are a good choice, but any would work, even dovii in a tank that size. If you are goaled to work with only a pair, you will need to divide the tank from time to time. I would recommend peeling of specimans as they grow out so you end up with a pair + 2 to disperse aggression and protect the female. Worked real well with grammodes.
