Which Parachromis pair is best suited for a 140g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

its also funny that you claim a 140 is to small for a dovii but good for a jag when in fish tanks they both are gonna end up being the same size with the dovii maybe being a couple inches bigger

Dovii can get 2x the size of jags, and faster IME.

sorry to the guy who started this post i wasnt trying to mess up your thread just stated the parachromis i liked and as usual one of the mfk finest had to try and prove he knows more than someone else. i wont post on your thread anymore and good luck with your jags.

 You proved all anyone needed to know with your first response.

wow dude why do you even post on the cichlid forum if you know everything you need to know and dont care because they are just feeder producers for you, that is the stupidest thing iv seen someone type on here and believe me iv seen some stupid crap, if you want to have feeders then breed cons not large predatory cichlids, and they have to be that aggressive when breeding so that their BABIES don't get eaten not them loser, there are not many freshwater fish out there that can make a meal out of a fully grown dovii or umbee

Pair of dovii, or smaller parachromis, will be fine in a 6 ft or larger footprint. Minimum tank requirements that are formulaic are arguably skewed to be conservative (i.e. generous), especially when using atypical max fish size as an input. "Arguably" is the operative word as evidenced by this thread.

If that 6 foot is also by 2x you would be OK for the short term with dovii and for a good long time with the others. Personally, I wouldn't put any fish that's well over a foot in length in a tank like that forever. For instance, an 18" dovii would barely be able to turn in a 6 ft. 125 gallon.

MY DOVII ARE FINE AND BEEN BREEDING LIKE RABBITS FOR OVER A YEAR AND A HALF AND THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN IN A 100 GALLONS AND NEVER WILL

How old are your dovi, you say they have been breeding 1 1/2years? How big are they? How big is your tank, I know you say less than 100 gallons?

Curious

There is alot of good pointers here as to what type of tank size is needed to house Parachromis species. This definitely gives me something to think about when planning my next tank (which won't take as long as i thought).

The 140g tank which is going to house the Jags is 5' 3" x 1' 9,7" x 1' 11,6".

Also commenting on the recent posts, i really can't see the point in raising Paras (or other cichlids species) as feeders. My aim with cichlids has always been to try and keep the fishes as healthy and happy as possible, and to give them as much space as i can. This to obtain as much "natural" behaviour as possible in an aquarium. The harmony of a well balanced aquarium with fishes expressing more natural behaviour is just awesome in my opinion.

Ofcourse many species breed simply because they can or must, but i like to think that the cichlids i've kept in the past and still keep breed because they like their enviroment... not because they have to.

Might be wishful thinking, but i still like the thought :D

They would all work except dovii of course. Everyone responding will tell you thier opinion drawn from experience. Bottom line is to educate yourself and pick which one catches your interest because you can't go wrong with parachromis!!!

You are wrong, in the internet age, you get a lot of opinions from people with NO personal experience. They regurgitate whatever they read, be it real or false, in their mind they have become an expert.

Always take advice with a grain of salt.

Valid point. I have had my jag almost 6 years and had a dovii for a short stint. I have only heard about the rest of the "para"s, but all the info shared with me about them was for the most part a consensus. Since I haven't had experience with them all does that negate my opinion on this thread?

No, it doesn't. Info consumed here and elsewhere is accountable depending on its supplier. No rep, or low rep = grain of salt. Higher rep, more grains....

I'm new to this board (relatively), so take above with one grain.
