Which parrot/bird for me?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All of the Pyrrhura conures would be great ones that would fit what you want and they aren't as lounds as the suns either. The Senegal would be another good match for you I think. And the mini macaws are just as loud as a sun conure they just are on a different pitch then them so unless it was the pitch of them I would avoid them or any larger bird then the suns because the larger the bird the stronger the voice they have. And I am all for adoption since there are so many out there needing homes just be aware of all of the potentional problems the bird may have. I would recommend going to a bird store and seeing of their are any you like,

i have 2 parrots currently, a sun conure and a cockatoo, my cockatoo was more of a save then an adopt. he had plucked feather syndrome, hes currently doing great. if you looking for a smart bird go with a cockatoo. one thing to keepin mind is all birds are loud. the cockatoo's screach is louder then the sun conures but the sun conure likes to yell for ever.
---------------

My neighbor has few cockatails outside in avairy and a green amazon which yells obscene things in Spanish (brings out during day) .

All of them combined are nothing compared to a cockatoo which is about a block away .

I like the noise but it is a surprisingly loud screach and you can hear it 2 blocks away .

First of all, I've had bad luck with birds. My first one, a cockatiel. Great bird, I was upstairs and it get scared and jumped off. Cat was nearby and got it. Good thing my mom was nearby(her cats, but she liked the bird) because I probably would have thrown it off the deck.(I dont like most cats)(His name was Cheeko)

Second Bird was a sun conure, loved it most of the time(was soooooooo loud). Well I was giving it its weekly bath in the bathtub with very little water in it and something made me leave for like two min. Well Cheech got his beak stuck in the metal grate and drowned.

I vowed I wouldnt try to do birds again untill now, im really missing having one.

Heres what I want to have in a bird:
Smart
Quieter than a sun conure
Nice
Funny

It doesnt matter the kind, Im currently looking into bigger types.

What kinds do you think fit that criteria?

Im also looking into adopting one. I always used to see cuckatoos and other types of parrots in the free trader(when I used to read it), so I put a wanted ad in the paper. If the bird seems nice and in good health, Is there any bad side effects to adopting a bird?

Parakeets are real cute . Granted not like a parrot but they do meet your criteria even love birds are neat.

Why not a green aracari? Or if you have the money, a larger toucan species?

They are incredibly friendly, dead silent, zero bite pressure, and can easily be tought tricks (play catch, backflip, etc).

They also live about 20-25 years, instead of 60+ for the bigger parrots like macaws and cockatoos, which I might add are loud and phycologically very complicated.

The only drawback is having to feed nothing but fresh fruit, and watching for that iron storage disease (cant remember the name) by feeding low-iron foods. But if you plan it out and write it all down, its not that hard or complicated.

Try Emerald Forest Bird Gardens if youre interested, they have great birds and info.

Good luck :)

parolette.. smart, love to perform, can be kept alone, can be taught a vocabulary, and are pretty quite birds.

That place has a great selection even the mini toucans think called toucanets.

Any1 have any experience with quakers or Senegal parrots?
ive had my quaker, logan, for about three years now and ive taken care of several others at work. ime, if they are trained properly from a young age, the are sweet, playful, and intelligent birds. they can get really loud at times though

I second the toucan, neighbor has one its an amazing bird.

Also has a hyacinth macaw that's dead silent and bilingual.

Both are priced for nutty owners though.

I looked at the toucans and the cheapest one is over 1500 with shipping. Still am interesred though, will have to sell some things to afford it though.
