Not sure about the US, but i know i heard before top quality Koi from Japan are made sterile before getting so people cant breed them any more...
This supposedly helps keep those breeders in business and demand for certain patterns high...
Again, not sure about the US, but in Japan a Koi sold for an astronomical price because ut had a full white body and red circle ontop of his head that made it look like the japanese flag...
