Which Variety of Koi are Most Profitable to Breed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think maybe you misunderstood me. I'm not trying to be rude or critical. I was just trying to ask straight forward questions.

I don't see anything wrong with getting into breeding koi for the enjoyment of it and to make a little money. There are just a lot of people that seem to think they can jump in and get rich. Lol

Those are both good varieties of koi. Bekko might be a nice one to get and you could mix it with both those types.
It sounds like you are in an ideal area for selling. I'm up north. So not as many koi keepers up here.

Where I used to live in Wisconsin, at local fish club auctions you could get a bag of two or 3, three inch Koi for about $5 to $10.

I got all except the blue one at the auctions, got the 12" blue one for $15 from a guy who was selling his house,

Koi size is mostly genetics. Show Koi are judged on pattern, color, intensity of color, SHAPE, shape of pattern, even how graceful it swims. As far as profit, I guess that depends on the buyer. I remember red and white were always favorites with Japanese, so Kohaku or Tanchos fetched lots, it's been a while though.

Not sure about the US, but i know i heard before top quality Koi from Japan are made sterile before getting so people cant breed them any more...

This supposedly helps keep those breeders in business and demand for certain patterns high...

Again, not sure about the US, but in Japan a Koi sold for an astronomical price because ut had a full white body and red circle ontop of his head that made it look like the japanese flag...

That is the Tancho:)
I haven't heard about sterilizing koi myself.

^ I just remember hearing about that Koi practice many years ago first when there was a show talking about Prized Koi breeders from Japan, then another time from one of the old LFS store owners i knew... Personally i was never really big on Koi, but my dad back in the days had a few really amazing specimens...

In UK we get many Israeli koi imported that have good color . compared to UK bred the reds are much redder wheras UK bred seems to be more dark orange . now talking japanese the colors are even better as they have a strict culling process .
