I've got males of both, but don't have room to breed both. If I'm going to breed one I've got to get rid of the other for space. I know where I can get an egg laying female argentea, and female umbee's are a dime a dozen. I don't think I'll have problems unloading fry of either.

I'm just getting tired of my all male tank with everyone cordoned off with egg crate. It's taken a lot of the personality out of the fish and they just sulk in their own area.

Don't worry about tank size, I've got a 210 they could go into.

Let me know which one and why. I'm really 50/50 on this.

Vieja Argentea. Im a sucker for Viejas especially the Argenteas. I guess I would pick this breed because of the looks of it and the personality they have. Plus I believe you could have a better rate of socializing this breed over the Umbee... Which would help the sales of this fish!:D

umbie all the way. Argentea is nice but more available in the trade. Umbie's are hard to come by. Do you have a female?

Both your fish are beautiful. I say go with the Argentea (Im a Veija guy).
The reason being is that just think of all the potential homes the Umbee's will go to. I bet 99% end up in homes that are inadequate for fish of this magnitude.
Probably the same for the Argentea too but probaby not as bad.

I'm with argentea for basically the same reasons as heavyhitter. Umbee's are so big, they're somewhat of a "niche" fish in that 99.9% of fishkeepers can't maintain in properly...it's the same for dovii IMO. How many guys are setting up 300G specimen tanks?

Argentea while also aggro can be kept communally, yet they're harder to come by than the umbee. If I was going to start a breeding project I'd probably pick V. argentea over about any other cichlid, other than real rarities like Uaru fernandezyepezi, beani, stuff like that.
