White fuzz help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The problem might not be fungal, but bacterial; in particular Columnaris. I've only seen fungus grow on a tank wide scale in tanks that were laden with uneaten food and wildly polluted with excess bio matter. Fungus takes root on the dead or decaying tissue of a fish, not on a healthy fish.
Advanced stages of Columnaris result in the white growths on the exterior of the fish, and the lethal damage to the organs. The bacterial bloom can grow on the decor and glass. A fish breeder, friend of mine recommends treating Columnaris with FURAN 2 and Kanamycin (together).
Hope things level out soon.

Here is a pic of what my hoses that I installed on my pumps a week ago look like now. These were clear when I installed them. It's no wonder the fish are getting sick. I just pulled the pumps and disassembled them to see if there was any noticeable build up or fungus inside of them but they look normal. I looked into Columnaris, but that doesn't seem to fit with the symptoms on the fish. The white always starts on the eyes and builds up there until it either gets better or takes the fish out. I'm going to pull the carbon and order some Seachem Purigen as suggested.

After doing some more reading I am starting to think that the low ph may be the primary cause of the cloudy eyes that my fish are experiencing. My water test kit only goes as low as 6.0 and the color was very close to the 6.0 shade. It's possible my ph is even lower than that. I'm going to do a quick ph test on my tap water to see where that comes in because I have been doing regular weekly 40 percent water changes and still coming in very low. My previous tank had african cichlid gravel that maintained a higher ph, so that is definitely a change moving to this tank.

Well if ur water is acidic adding some crushed coral will help to bring it up.

My tap water comes in at about a 7 PH and when I treat it with Amquel Plus it bumps it up even more, so I'm going to do a big water change, treat with Amquel and see if I can pick up some crushed coral. Do you guys recommend crushed coral in a bag in the sump or actually in the main tank?

The only things that seemed to help are keeping my tank at 85 degrees,

That leads me to believe that the white fuzz is indeed fungal, because fungus dies at high temperatures. You might want to bump it a big higher and make sure to blast the surface with good flow at the same time for good oxygen exchange. The fish deaths and the fungus might or might not be related....

Crushed coral may not help as it dissolves rather slowly,. The low/crushing pH maybe due to lack of KH. Add some soda bicarbonate to keep the KH readable. This will stop the pH issues. Google for the dosage you need.

Yep, test the kh and add baking soda to raise it if it is low. You want it to be higher then 5 I believe.

I just did a KH test and the drops never turned blue when I shook the vial. It went straight to yellow with the second drop, which leads me to believe I have very soft water and a KH of around 0 if I am understanding the test right. I am going to add some baking soda as suggested to increase the KH and hopefully add some stability to my PH.

In the meantime, also do a big water change just in case, and add a tbsp of epsom salt per 10 gallons to treat the fish, the stuff is antifungal.
