So my gar is definitely getting better, all the color has started to return where the wound was. Didn't use any medication just changed his diet.

I'm happy to hear your gar is getting better. We all learned somthing from this thread. If this happens to another member we can now help them with a better understanding of what's going on. Thanks for updating as this went along. Many times we do not get to hear the final outcome, thanks for posting.

Thank you guys for all your input and help. Here is a picture of the gar tank, as you can see there color and patterns have really started to pop since getting them frozen mice.

Keep us updated on the results of treatment.

Here is an update: today is day 3 on meds and the gar seams to be doimg fine as far as putting up with meds but this "what ever it is" thing we are teing to cure is only getting worse. Today thwre was some white fuzz like fungus comming from the gars wounds. Here is a picture. I think we are loosing the battle here tank temp is 85.7 f to boost the metabolism of the gar. Any ideas? The fuzz isnt in the picture cuz I sucked it off while doing the water change.

Ps. Those little black spots you see on the gar is just some left over peat moss that didn't rince away when I set up the hospital tank. Those spots have nothing to do with the illness

I would discontinue the MG/3X sulfa. While it didn't work, it may have provided hints as to what this may be and how to attack it. The same way dropsy is an external manifestation of and internal issue. I think this may be some combination of both. I was doing some reading about this and while there isn't a great deal of information reguarding specific issues as they relate to gars I think this should be attacked on two fronts. I'm looking at a combination treatment using Kanamycin and Metronidazole. Kanamycin treats several fungal and bacterial diseases which includes Dropsy, Popeye, tail rot, septicemia and flexibacter because it is very well absorbed it is very affective in treating both internal and external bacterial and fungal infections. Metronidazole is effective and safe treatment for several protozoan and anaerobic bacterial diseases. They are safly used together and provide very effective broad spectrum coverage for a combination of bacterial, fungal and protozoan based diseases.
