White Spots on Rays..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Rays don't feel it when they get burned. Trust me, if there is an exposed heater in the tank your ray WILL burn itself. This can prove fatal as it will cause a serious infection. Ray keeping is not anything like keeping other fish. It's important to monitor tour ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. The first 2 must be 0 at all times or you won't have a ray very long

There are 2 things I'd guess those white marks to be, and they are both ray killers, either heater burn, or ammonia burn. Check your ammonia and cover your heater if you are serious about keeping your ray alive

Good idea to move your heater to the sump, but that is not heater burn. As stated above, rays occasionally get these bumps. Not sure what they are but they come and go.

Are you saying this happens even to rays in perfect water and no illness?

So I don't need to put medications for it or it's not something to worry about?

No medications. Never a good idea to use medications on rays unless you know exactly what your treating. Best medication for rays is perfect water quality and lots of food

I just did my water parameters test, the pH is around 6.5, ammonia is 2ppm, and nitrate is 0ppm.

Ammonia is 2ppm and nitrate is 0ppm, is it because the biological system hasn't established yet, I just setup my tank 2 weeks ago and I use biozym to add the beneficial bacteria

Not good. Rays produce 10× more ammonia than any other fish the same size. Worst part is they are super sensitive to ammonia. Probably the best thing to do is use some seachem prime. It will neutralize the ammonia, but won't slow your bio down. Will still read on the test but won't be harmful. Ammonia is a ray killer
