I've been feeding my fish almost exclusively frozen bloodworms for the past two weeks or so (but recently I've been giving them Tetra cichlid sticks). Here's the problem: my largest Salvini at almost 3" began excreting white, stringy poo today. However he has no lesions on his head. He's definitely eating very little (if at all) now. I've heard that too much frozen food can cause digestive problems. Is that what's happening to my Salvini now? Note that only the largest Salvini has this problem - the other two, which are around 2" in length, are fine. Filtration is more than adequate and I just did a 35% water change four days ago. The Kribs in the same tank as the Sals look perfect.

Do some water change and vary there diet. I mix in some algae disks and other veggie based flakes/pellets with all my cichlids. Don't know if this will help, but it won't hurt. Maybe some melafix and pimafix...

Thanks for the suggestions. BTW, is white, stringy poo always a sign of HITH? If not, is it always certainly harmful? The Sal doesn't show any other symptoms of HITH, and I thought only large-ish cichlids get it.

You should really vary the diet. I personally think blood worm should only be given as a treat, as there's not much nutritional value in them in the first place. White poo does sound like internal parisites, i would treat accordingly. Also another sign is if the fish are starting to lose weight. For the cichlids you mention you can't beat hikari food or your own prepared food like mussles and prawns cut up. Basically high protien foods. Good luck.

Ok. What brands do you suggest? Just out of curiosity, why does only one of them have the parasites when all of them eat exactly the same stuff and have lived in the same tanks all their lives (even at the LFS)?

time to quarantine. most likely your sal has internal parasites. start treating the tank with jungle parasite buddies...

I agree. White stringy poo is usually indicative of internal parasites.

Why do some people at work catch colds while others around them stay healthy? There are many factors that can play a part. Genetics, diet, stress, etc. The other fish may have parasites as well and just aren't showing symptoms yet.

Where did you find this info? I would like to know what you based it on. I think bloodworms are very nutritious and a good food for smaller fish.

White poo is internal parasites. Not a symtom of hole in the head
