There are a few people in any forum that are quick to act like they know things. I see a lot of new people, myself included, ask questions only to be answered by people who "read somewhere" but dont really know. I love getting advise from people how ACTUALLY KNOW. A good example is the tank mate questions. A lot of people have fish living together that is totally down talked on because it is written that they shouldn't go together but when it is proven, they say"its luck and it shouldnt be tried". A good example is with piranhas, so many different types, who has actually kept them all mixed to actually know what wont work, and who just says it wont work?

No such thing as someone who knows everything. Per the example listed above, stocking can really depend on the attitude of the fish as well as many factors. For some, it works, for others, it doesn't. There is no definitive answer that can be given in a lot of cases.

for the example given people say it cant be done because there is science backing their reasoning people say you can't keep pygocentrus piranhas with serrasalmus piranhas or serras with serras becuase of the behavior in the wild serras are parasitic fin nippers/opportunistic omnivores (for the most part) and pygos are more standard opportunistic carnivores the serras would nip at the fins of the pyogs until they get fed up and either the pygos kill the serra or the serra kills the pygo via stress

id say right now your the one acting like you know it all

If you find the guy that knows everything........PLEASE let me know. I got some questions for him. Really though, isn't not knowing what this forum is about - sharing info? I have done a few "unconventional" things at work that have become standard practice with some help and input from a few different guys. Nobody knows everything. Remember, everything is up for debate, and improvements can always be made. Progress baby!

Way off point:screwy:. He is simply saying that people with no first hand experience are giving answers and making statements regarding subjects they have only read about. It is true to some degree.

I don't think any self respect individual will claim himself/herself knows everything.
in regards to your question about cohab of different species of piranhas, some has done it before for a good period of time but in majority it didn't work out. I think mostly is because of the lack of space due to the small tank size we have and the setup of the tank. the other reason why such cohab will most likely not work is due to the natural behaviors of the fish. Most serrasalmus are ambush predators in order to do so they need to be unseen, so any fish you place within it's territory will either be food or potential competitors or so kind of threat, so out of instinct it'll either try to eat them or drive them away or hide from them. with being in a small glass cage as compare to a great river most likely it'll result in the death of one of the fish you place in the tank, sometimes both due to stress. the people that had success in the past usually had a relatively big tank (the one I know of had a 300g tank) and proper setup (hiding place for each fish) and just right number of fish (so the tank isn't over stocked and each have their own space). of course the personality of each fish is important as well.
can cohab work for sure? certainly, if conditions are right. however, most of us cannot provide such condition; and I believe statistically most of the cohab attempts ended in failure. Unless you are very experienced and have the money to burn, you shouldn't attempt such cohab. even if you do decide to do so, should keep a close eye on them and have a separate tank ready just in case they start to attack each other.
