The father comment was insinuating that you were playing on a pun. Often when a joke is really bad (cheesy) and loaded with a pun, it is referred to as a “dad joke”.

So calling someone a 'father' and/or their jokes 'father jokes' is the opposite of a complement. Do I read it right?

It was more of a bad joke about a bad joke. Aka dad joke. I make bad jokes that no one else laughs at and that is the funny part to my friends. Not the joke itself.

Being a father is not a bad thing. Making a bad dad joke isn’t a bad thing, it’s more of a quirk than anything.
