buy saying that the betta was hanging in the bottom i think it was sick coz bettas ussually are top dwellers, my best bet is it was dieing and some fish finished it off.
Best answer possible.:) In my opinion, it will be unusual for a betta to lie on the bottom.;)

How long did you keep the betta and tiger barbs together? It already makes sense that as notorious fin nippers, why mix the tiger barbs with bettas? No long-finned species would ever be spared unless that fish can fend for itself particularly the Congo Tetras.;)

I have kept my male betta with 4 albino tiger barbs and 6 regular tiger barbs for about a year and a half now. No problems. They are in a 55 gallon tank.

I know for a fact that tiger barbs, redfin/rainbow sharks and paradise fish do not mix with male bettas. I tried it many different times when I was younger.

I'm saying Eel. Doesn't matter if it's well fed. It'll just eat because it can.

I would agree on the barbs if they were bigger or if for the fact that they were able to get him in the plants but most unlikely, i would say post mortum but not probable cause bettas take days to expire id say the eel its the only thing big enough, good rule if he can fit in the mouth he's eaten and if the barbs ate him or any of the small fish it would have been the left or right half of the betta not the back half, my guess is that he swam infront of the eel and got it when he wasnt looking
