ive seen tanks with "assorted" but they were all pure and not hybrids at my lfs not at petsmart

The problem is that you never really know if a fish is pure if you get it from an assorted tank. So please don't breed/sell the fry.

I am not saying hybrids don't look cool. (Heck I have how many now.) But for the good of the hoby, please only sell a fish as some species only if you know for certain what its parents are.

It definitly could be hybrid but then it could be pure bred too.. give it time and post more pics and sooner or later someone may reconize the baby .. baby Africans can be tricky to ID as babies and also the LFS sells more males then females..{males are almost always prettier right from the start} but every now and then your plainer color females slip into the batch..sometimes it is very difficult to find females so please keep it and raise in and in a few months get another ID on it.. it may even be a rare one .. just have to wait and see..and this baby is very cute!

Yeah I had mollies that bred, and ended up with a bunch of mutts. When I switched to a cichlid tank I gave all my fish to my lfs and from the look on his face when he got them, I'm pretty sure they were feeders.

how can you end up with a bunch of mutts from mollies..did they breed with platy's.. did you let them grow out? wonder how they looked..

The local shops around here usually have an assorted Africans section, and they're purebloods, not hybrids. I can usually identify every species in a tank. My understanding is that these assorted lots come about when a retailer gets down to a few fish of a variety of species (too few to fill a regular order) and so combines them to clear his inventory.

Your pic isn't that great, Richito, but based on that pic it looks like a female Melanochromis joanjohnsonae.
