To live under the assumption that the mixed tanks are simply a mix of pure breeds is silly. Even if the fish looks identical to what you think the id is. To tell the for certain that it is not a mixed cichlid that looks more like one parent is difficult. I have no problems with hybrids, but to just decided it is pure and breed it and sell the fry, that would be irresponsible.

I agree ..you do take a big chance when you see african mixed label.. i am sure that covers them quite well if they happen to have hybrids in there as well.. the only sure way you can know a fishes quality is to buy from a quality breeder or LFS that orders the fish special for you..most LFS do not practice throwing all the africans into a mixed tank..but i do notice petsmart and other big chains are doing that..it is either because they are not popular fish in the area or thats the way they order from wholesaler ..actually even if they are purebred and high quality i do not like buying them this way.. i really want to see the label of what the fish actually is.. no quessing or asking someone who knows even less ..lol

You can say that about 90% (who knows, maybe more) of tropical cichlids (Old World and New World) sold in the hobby.
Who's to say you don't have a cross species hybrid even if it's not from a "mixed tank"? Who's to say you're not getting a subspecies hybrid, or a variant cross which - if yet undescribed, could make it a species hybrid anyway.
It's a bit depressing, and sucks a bit of the joy out of things, especially if you're really "anti-hybrid". Thankfully I'm not. :D

yeah, most Labidochromis caeruleus and metraclima esthraes and aulonocara species over there in the us are mixed species. say if you cross a red zeb with a yellow lab and the fry looks like a straight yellow lab then crosses with a pure bred yellow lab again. you wouldn't know the difference if it looks exactly the same as a pure blood lab.

all mbuna cross breed.

.also over here in australia lithobates crossing with e. blues is a huge problem .you cant tell if its a blue or a lithobate if its a young girl. and could keep breeding untill you realise the males look like lithobates. then you realise youve put put 2000 cross bred muts on the market an have ruined everything in the area...........

i have all my breeding colonies in seperate tanks so i can guarantee pure bred fish.

except one tank which is a display , my 4x2x2 with sump + cannisters etc...
has blue dolphins, acei ngara and msuli point, demasoni, lithobates, polstigma and so on...

pretty sure no one is all worked up... just giving their opinion on the importance of identification and proper labeling... No one is upset with you...

Hybrid/pureblood is a touch topic. I say here on this forum we do a great job keeping it civil. I do not think the mods really worry much on this section...

Have no fear we are all here trying to help... take what information you need and use it to your advantage...
