I agree with Wyomingite. The fish is a female joanjohnsonae, formerly known as Melanochromis exasperatus

The problem is that you never really know if a fish is pure if you get it from an assorted tank. So please don't breed/sell the fry.

I am not saying hybrids don't look cool. (Heck I have how many now.) But for the good of the hoby, please only sell a fish as some species only if you know for certain what its parents are.

YEAH DONT WANT LITTLE BASTARD CICHLIDS SWIMMIN AROUND:ROFL:

The local shops around here usually have an assorted Africans section, and they're purebloods, not hybrids. I can usually identify every species in a tank. My understanding is that these assorted lots come about when a retailer gets down to a few fish of a variety of species (too few to fill a regular order) and so combines them to clear his inventory.

^^^ i agree and thats the type of "assorted" i was talking about.

Your pic isn't that great, Richito, but based on that pic it looks like a female Melanochromis joanjohnsonae.

i agree, looks like a female/juvenile joanjohnsonae...

It is too small/young to determine whether or not it is male or female, but it is M. joanjohnsonae.

LOL, guess I should have specified juvenile. I've always had a bad habit of referring to anything not showing male coloration as "female".

Thank you,, but i want you to know it could still grow up to be a handsome male... :D but it will probably be a female... but what ever sex it is..it is a great find for it to be Joanjohnsonae...!!!!:D

To live under the assumption that the mixed tanks are simply a mix of pure breeds is silly. Even if the fish looks identical to what you think the id is. To tell the for certain that it is not a mixed cichlid that looks more like one parent is difficult. I have no problems with hybrids, but to just decided it is pure and breed it and sell the fry, that would be irresponsible.

Im lost so can you breed different types of fish or what im not to the hobby and i know angles and clownfish will breed or so i read. but can other completely different fish breed
