It's interesting that no one addresses fish life span and overall health into this conversation as a measure of your successful feeding regime.
Just think back about all the fish you've had, google their maximum life spans and see where you stand in terms of proper "fishkeeping". I know it's hard to pinpoint an issue to a particular thing but personally I don't change what I do because it's working for me in that respect. If it didn't I would have experimented and tried different things, including changing the feeding schedule.
But do not overstock and then counteract with feeding sparingly. It's not a solution. And it will stunt the fish no matter what because of both bad water quality and lack of proper food.
